Although Huawei (pronounced "WAH-Way") has been around since 1987, it wasn’t until 2007 that we launched our first mobile device in the USA and our timing could not have been better.

Over the past several years, touch screen smart phones were gaining in popularity, but they came with a big price tag… until we launched the most affordable Android device, that is, and sold over 2.5 million of them in 2011!

Huawei is all about affordable innovation.  As we continue to grow within the USA, Huawei will continue to develop mobile devices that create maximum value for our customers like AT&T, Cricket, MetroPCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, TracFone, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon. So keep an eye out for us.

Why is Huawei engaged in the device business?

Founded in 2003, Huawei Device was started as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Huawei Technologies and was originally founded to provide accessories for the 3G network, not necessarily as a “handset” business.  The development of the Device business has taken place over three stages:

Stage #1 (2003 to 2005): During this stage, market conditions forced many CDMA device vendors to withdraw from the market due to small profit margins.  Huawei persisted in investing to meet the CDMA carriers’ requirements for devices helping them attract subscribers.  Huawei Device has been ranked among the top four CDMA device manufacturers globally for a number of years, and is currently ranked number one in the Chinese market.

Stage #2 (2006 to 2008): During this time, Huawei Device became the world leader in the data cards market, and helped 3G operators develop their 3G data services and boost ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). Huawei’s pioneering plug and play USB modem was named (along with the Nokia N97 and iPhone) by European analysts as "one of the top three most influential creative products in 2007." Since 2007, Huawei Device’s MBB products have collectively been the leader in market share for four years in a row.

Stage #3 (2009 to 2011): During this time, smart phones are all the rage. Huawei Device developed affordable smart phones, up to five million smart phones were ordered in 2010, and 20 million smartphones were shipped in 2011.

Stage #4 (2012 and beyond): Huawei continues to expand its product development and launch a wide range of devices, all of which is centered around our customers.
